Interview
Wow, long time not seen… And I come back with a meme, shame on me – oh well.

Anyway, did the interview thing…

Here are the rules:

01- Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."

02- I will respond by asking you five questions of a very intimate and creepily personal nature. Or not so creepy/personal.

03- You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.

04- You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.

05- When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

As for me, [info]alwaysjbj did the interview.

1. What drew you to writing fanfic?

2. What do you look for in a story (be it fanfiction or a published story)... what elements draw you in and hold your attention?

3. Pick your favourite Btvs or Ats character and tell me WHY you love them so much?

4. What is your favourite scene from one of the episodes and why?

5. What do you most love and hate about the Spuffy relationship... both on the show and in fanfic and what it it that makes you a die hard Spuffy?

1.
When I see something I believe to be wrong, be it in a show or a book, I have this urge to fix it somehow. For a long time I was content with imagining those solutions (and annoying my sister by telling her about them), but when I started reading fanfic I fell in love with the idea that I'd be able to show them to others. Plus, I absolutely love reading and always wanted to be able to write something myself. Sadly language and literature isn't my strong suit, I was always better with math and technical stuff. Because of that I knew writing a "real" novel is way out of my league, so fanfic gave me the opportunity to dabble in writing – and the hope that in time I'll get to the point where at least I like what I'm producing.

2.
Hmm, tough question. I guess the most important thing is a good plot. The story has to make sense and be conclusive, and it needs a certain amount of suspense to draw me in. I absolutely hate it if the logic of a story is flawed – and believe me, I notice mistakes like that every time. There has to be a reason for everything, characters that change their behavior in mid-story without any reason at all will make me stop reading every time. Oh, and there has to be a happy ending. If I'm not sure if that's where the story is leading I'll read the ending first to make sure I won't be disappointed. Where fanfic is concerned I think the characterization is one of the most important parts. If I can't recognize the character5s from the show in a fic I'll stop reading. Original fiction is great, but if you can't admit that that's what you're writing, you'll just have to live with one less reader.

3.
That's easy. Spike. I always sympathize with the underdog and in addition I have a thing for bad-boys – and he's the poster-boy for both. That he's hot helps too of course, but it all started with my need to back up the one character that no one in the show seemed to think deserved something as simple as common courtesy or respect. Plus, I've never understood why the fact that vampires drink human blood should make then those evil, despised creatures. Whether someone is evil depends sorely on ones point of view, and it does NOT equal disgusting or any of those other labels they used. The fact that he turned out to have layers only cemented my opinion of him.

4.
That'd be the end of the teaser in "Out of my mind". You know, when Spike does his spiel: "I will know your blood, Slayer. … I will make your neck my chalice … and drink deep.", turns dramatically and swaggers off – right into an open grave. I just love t5hat scene, cracks me up every time. – Yeah, I know, not exactly deep or romantic or anything; but hey, I like humor.

5.
Oh my, I have to split that one I think. On the show is easy, Buffy is what I hate about their relationship. In my eyes there is simply no excuse for the way she treated him – in any of the later seasons. The "he tried to kill me" excuse just doesn't do it for me, since she did the same thing – and would have no matter how he behaved. She was nasty, abusive, cruel and heartless; and I absolutely hate it that the writers let her get away with it.
As for like – there wasn't much about their relationship on the show I liked. It was the potential of what it could have become that drew me in.

Fic is harder, as it depends on the story. I don't like it if the curse of their relationship doesn't ring true; if the authors takes them to the stage where he/she wants them without any explanation, just because they what it that way. This is most obvious when a writer wants to put smut in their story even though the time is not right yet – but hey, the readers like it and it's hot – right? NO! Something else I hate is if the characters behave unlike themselves, but that's a different question I believe. Oh, I'm also not very found of the overly romantic view many writers seem to have; terms like "soulmate" or "true love" aren't really my thing. And love at first sight? Please…
What I like is when an author used his/her fic to realize the potential of their relationship and gives me what the show refused me.

As to why I'm stuck on this ship: As I mentioned above, Spike is my favorite character and he wanted Buffy, so I want to read/write fics where he gets her.

lol Thanks. As I just told C, I like to ramble. I don't always make sense, and I tend to forget things because my thoughts jump around too much, but I have an awful lot of fun doing it.

Not really a comment on the interview, though I did have a squint and was going "me too" through much of it. Don't ask me to pick a favourite scene though 'cause I'm way too spoiled for choice.

Just wanted to wish you a happy birthday. (What me crawling 'cause I want a favour? That'd be a yes... though probably not till I'm ready to start a new WIP.) Many Happy Returns, sweetie!

Aww, for me? That's so sweet :-) Thank you so much!

Gonna take a guess and say the favor in question is what C asked me about? No need to crawl for that, I actually feel kinda honored do be able to do something for you seeing how you gave me so many days (yes days, I re-read things I like quite often) of entertainment. Just let me know when you need them...

Yep, that'd be the one. I have a feeling that I can set up a database on my own site, but I need to go back through the literature/info pages to check. Hence the putting off getting it set up for Broken Things/Unfinished Business when I was rushing to get the first couple of chapters done before Mef's birthday, well that and doing a new template and everything, but mostly trying to work out what I need to do for the database.

That was me by the way. Blasted LJ. Mutter mutter.

lol, thought so.

Well, if you have trouble figuring out the database stuff feel free to email me with any questions you have. The quality of the tutorials and support-forums the hosts offer tends to vary between great and "huh?" lol...

Had a look at blueyonder's user pages. Doesn't look promising...

databases

With the restrictions on the network ports mentioned above, you cannot connect to a remote database from your site. You also cannot upload your own database to our servers. We're planning to look at offering database connectivity as a potential future service.

ETA. C gave me the code for one of her pages nad I pasted it into a blank page and uploaded it and it seemed to work. She even did a test post, so I'm now totally confused... but will worry about it when I have a new story to work on.
diabola79 From: [info]diabola79 Date: June 9th, 2006 09:31 am (UTC) (Link)
Hmm, not sure about the problem you mentioned before; seems odd to forbid access to remote databases, but if they think so...

Anyway, the code C gave you links to not only to a remote database, but to a form on my server. So for this form the database is not remote, but local. (Besides, I'm not aware of my server having any such restrictions.) If you take a look at the code you'll see that the link starts with "http://www.diabola.net/". It was just easier to do it this way since not every server allows php-scripts...

I think for you the two options that make the most sense would be that you either create your own database and put the scripts up on your server - or to leave them on mine and just put the link/code on your pages (like C does). In this case the main difference between your script and C's would be that you have different colors and that the email notifications about new reviews go to your email addy.

If you don't care for the version C uses (the form loading in an internal frame), you can also put up links that opens it on a separate page (that's how I use it).

Oh, and if you want to try using your own database (it has to be a MySQL database and your server has to allow php-scripts) I'd need the login information (only for the db) - as in your db-server, the name of your db, the login-name and the password (or I could show you where in the code you need to put that information). Let me know if you want to try that cos you'll need to know how to call the table and which fields it needs.

I hope this makes sense to you lol. I'm not sure how much you know about coding, databases and scripts, so I'm not sure what needs to be described in detail and what to gloss over because you already know it - gah - lol. Let me know what part of it you need more info about - or if I only told you stuff were already aware of.

Well, I vaguely understood some of that...

I can get by with general html, but I've never used frames at all. When I first started looking at building web pages they were already beginning to fall out of favour on the grounds of sccessibility so I've always avoided them.

I don't know any php at all.

When it comes to Script, I couldn't write any to save myself but I remember enough from when I did a bit of Basic and Pascal that I can usually work out what a piece of Script does if I really concentrate, but it's fairly hard work.

As for databases, my experience is limited to the ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) module on Access and I'm probably fairly rusty on that. SQL I imagine is similar in some respects but different in others. On the other hand, hubby's current job title is database administrator, so at least for part of the day I have someone on hand to interrogate if there's anything I'm not sure about.

I can't seem to log in to blueyonder at the moment to double check, but I'm pretty certain that they allow php, but don't support it. i.e. if there's a mistake somewhere in the coding (which obviously there wouldn't be) their tachnical support team aren't going to be any help but as long as you can look after it yourself it isn't a problem. I'm still not sure about loading a database on the site itself and whether it would work. I normally load stuff via Dreamweaver, but I've never really used it for more than creating fairly basic pages so I don't know if I can create a database within that? Or is that where the other Studio programs come in? In any case if the database were part of the site, I suspect it might load via the ftp.

As for presentation, the ideal would be for it to follow the CSS for the page it's set into, which is different for every story unfortunately. e.g. Angels and Demons (http://www.he-s-no-angel.net/4AD/ADZZZT.htm). In IE it looks like all the text has a cream background, but if you look in Firefox you can tell what I've done is use a semi-transparent background tile, so that on a green background it looks a lighter green, on purple it's a lighter purple Broken Things (http://www.he-s-no-angel.net/3BT/BTZZZT.htm). The actual form itself, I did have tiled to match the page background. I had been thinking of keeping the current look of the form but instead of having one review page for each story, I was thinking of putting the form at the bottom of the chapter when I start something new, on the grounds that if they've got one less link to click to get there then maybe a few more people might actually review... On the other hand, having one separate page sounds like it might be easier and it would make it look the same as the older stories... Both have advantages, and if I'm honest I'd probably rather avoid frames. If it helps, I can email you an example page and the matching CSS file.

Okay, I've been rambling away here and possibly not making too much in the way of sense and C is going to tell me off for not doing the writing thing, slave driver that she can be...Image (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZU)

I used the internal frame because it means that you don't have to put the php-code into your html-pages; something I tried to avoid on grounds of not all servers supporting it. I could have it generate the complete code for you, you'd only have to insert it into your html-pages. Problem with that would be that you have to safe all those pages as .php - and that you'd have to put in the code by using an editor. (As in a text-editor, not a proggy like DW or FP - at least I don't think they can handle php.) A php script can only be viewed correctly on a server/computer that supports it. So if you put in the code while you are editing the pages on your PC you'd end up with error-messages at the bottom of your document.)

Still, if you wanna try it that way that'd be fine with me.

Dreamweaver and databases - to tell the truth I have no clue if DW has an option for db and/or php. I like coding and have never tried using any of the programs for creating websites, it's much more fun to write the code myself (Yup, I have odd hobbies lol). Most hosts have a link in their interface that leads to the administration for the database. You usually only use it for creating tables in your database. The most common one for MySQL is phpMyAdmin. If you want you can check if your host uses that one (once you can log in again) and I'd be able to send you sql-code that will create a table without you having to do more than put it into the query-box and hit Go.

I already saw that you're using css (I took a peek at your source-code ;-)), which is great since the rev-form script uses separate css-files as well. You'd prolly have to add one or two entries to your css-files - that is if you want the style C has, but otherwise we can just link the script to the files you already have. That way if you ever decide to change your layout the rev-forms would still fit in (without any extra work).

As for them not supporting php scripts, it seems to work fine so far, so I don't think there are any horrible errors in it. And it's not like I'd tell you to leave me alone if you happened upon some bug; I'd naturally see about fixing it.

If I have time this weekend I'll see that I put together an example for you using your CSS-files. Can't promise you though, since the boss is having a party on Saturday evening and my sis is visiting until Saturday morning - if I'm too busy I'll play with it next week. That way you'll be able to see how it looks in the different versions, might make the decision easier.

Oops! Didn't get this until I came back to the post to check if you had replied, thanks to LJ logging me out.

Don't worry if you don't get a chance to look at it. I'm really not in any sort of rush, so just whenever. I've set up a subsite in DW (http://www.he-s-no-angel.net/DIA/), using the option to be able to use php and MySQL. I basically copied over a very much cut down version of the site, butI don't know whether this means that the preview screen will pick up the code correctly or not, but I guess that's the case of try it and see. In any case it should be easy enough to upload any files you send me. Whether it'll work is a different matter but I should be able to upload them.

One thing I forgot to mention is that in the past I've had a separate review pages that are linked to from The Crypt (e.g. http://www.he-s-no-angel.net/3BT/BTZZZC.htm as compared to http://www.he-s-no-angel.net/3BT/BTZZZT.htm) and they forward (eventually once you jump through all Bravenet's hoops) to their own thank you page, with links for people to go back to that site, but both this and the pages you would reach from He's No Angel contain the same table of reviews. It seems like this shouldn't be too difficult to do, but I know with computers sometimes something you expect to be easy can turn out to be a total pain, so if it is, don't worry. I can just put an email link in the pages I send to Luba instead. It shouldn't make too much difference as it's not that often that anyone reading there bothers to review.

If it makes it any easier (and it might not if it means editing the code) I'm not really bothered about having the option to reply via the form, as I'm more likely to reply via email.
